ECOWAS - The fourteen nations that have formed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are uniquely situated to demonstrate how a multi-state coordination of hydropower dam operations can restore the natural functions of the rivers on which they are constructed without any appreciable sacrifice in power output or reliability. In addition to improved food production and ecological benefits, reoptimization may also improve: water supply reliability, power production and system reliability, flood management, and human health. NHI and its partners have developed a concept paper detailing what a reoptimization program to this extent would entail.
Senegal River Basin - The operation of Manantali (Mali) and Diama (Senegal)dams has resulted in regulating the flows above and below the massive and highly productive floodplain between them. Although technical work has been conducted to develop a protocal for artificially inundated the floodplain with dam releases, the current plan requires that some amount of power deliveries and revenues and storage for irrigation purposes be foregone as a result . NHI has developed a plan to examine the extent to which reoptimization techniques can be applied to provide environmental and livelihood benefits, without diminsihing the other benefits provided by the dams.
