Future Components

The existing Global Initiative components, particular those in West Africa, will be the learning laboratories for future components.  They will provide excellent insight into which dams are most promising for reoperation and the most successful techniques to apply.  NHI's newest project component, which it hopes to launch in early 2011, is in the Mekong/Lancang River Basin in Southeast Asia.  NHI is teaming up with the Mekong River Commission, China's Institute for Water Resources and Hydropower Research, WWF-Greater Mekong Programme, TNC's Global Freshwater Program, Conservation International, and the local government water/environmental agencies in the lower basin countries to help dam development proceed in a sustainable manner.

In addition, NHI has already made preliminary explorations of potential partnerships for dam reoperation in India and have received a positive response from National Institute of Hydrology.  The India component will likely focus on the Krishna basin.

NHI will next explore building components in Brazil (with The South American Conservation Region of The Nature Conservancy), Southeastern Africa and possibly Pakistan.
